Predesigned has various specialist production partners to apply your prints - with the right technique - to your clothing to be produced. Various techniques can also be combined, such as printing and embroidery.

In prints, you have to distinguish between two types of prints. A print that only uses a certain surface of the fabric and prints that are printed over the entire fabric, an all-over print.

Of course, Predesigned advises on the right choice of print technique or combination of print techniques for your images and texts.

Read all about the different types of prints and their advantages and disadvantages here.

Techniques:
- Screen printing (Screen printing)
 - Direct to Garment printing (DTG)
- Vinyl printing
- Embroidery
- Digital printing
- Print in clothing pattern
- Transfer printing
- Tie Dye

PRINTING ON FABRIC FOR CLOTHING PRODUCTION

A commonly used technique for placing prints on clothing is screen printing or perhaps better known as silkscreen printing. What is it? A screen print is made with a screen. This screen is a plate with tiny holes in the shape of your image. For a different color from your image or text, another screen is used, or if it can be done on one plate, the holes of the other colors are covered. The plate is placed flat on the fabric and the paint is then smeared over it. This is repeated until all the colors of your image or text have been used. Eventually, your entire image is created. The paints that are used today are (almost all) water-based and Okoe-Tex® certified. The possibilities with screen printing are almost endless. Of course, almost all colors can be mixed, but “3D prints”, “Glow in the Dark” and “Flock print” are also possible for special effects.

Advantages of Screen Printing:

• A technique with many possibilities

• The price per print is relatively low

Disadvantages of Screen Printing:

• A screen must be made per image

• The fabric must be flat to apply the print to, fabrics with a relief or coarsely knitted fabrics are therefore not suitable.

SCREENPRINTING

Vinyl print is another type of technique for applying texts and images. The technique is that a text or image is cut out of a special foil, vinyl, and this is applied to the fabric of the garment under heat.

There is a choice of various colours and qualities, which are regularly expanded. Vinyl print is available in various thicknesses, from very thin to very thick. Depending on the fabric on which the vinyl print is to be applied, and the effect it is to have, the right foil is chosen. There are also special qualities among the foils. Think of a sparkling Glitter foil. The Perfor, a perforated vinyl for creative effects. Of course there is also a PS Metallic foil in the colours silver and gold. Or what about the Electric foil, this is a metallic foil in matt colours.

The Stripflock offers 24 colours and despite the thickness of only 500 microns, this Flockprint feels comfortable. Vinyl print makes it possible to make a “photorealistic” print. A photo is printed on the Vinyl, this is cut out as desired and in the shape you want and applied to your fashion item. This allows you to apply photos in the quality as if they came straight from your printer.

Advantages of Vinyl print:

• Luxurious appearance

• High quality

Disadvantages of Vinyl print:

• Price is relatively high

• Less suitable for lightweight fabrics, the fabric becomes stiffer in the place where the vinyl print is applied

VINYLPRINTS

Seams are used to get the right fit. Prints therefore run away in the seams and therefore do not connect on the other side of the seam. Special software allows prints to continue over the seams, without interruption. This allows images and texts to continue over the garment. The image or print is then placed in the clothing patterns, as this is called. This is a special technique that is possible with digital clothing patterns. The principle is that the print is placed in the pattern and that the pattern is printed simultaneously with the print over the entire width and length of the fabric. As a kind of “all-over” print, but then only in the clothing patterns. When the pattern is cut out of the fabric and the garment is stitched together, all parts of the print come together and the text or print forms a whole.

Advantages Print placed in pattern:

• No interrupted prints

• A lot of creativity possible

Disadvantages Print placed in pattern:

• High costs to place print in pattern

• Fashion item must be printed completely

Tie-Dye is a technique in which knots are tied in a specific way with a rope in a garment. After this, the garment goes into a dye bath. If necessary, the garment can go through multiple dye baths to get different color effects on the garment.

Predesigned has a professional partner for applying Tie-Dye patterns by means of the dye baths.

Advantages of Tie-Dye:

• Original effect and motifs on clothing

Disadvantages of Tie-Dye:

• Exact result is difficult to guarantee

• Relatively expensive

Digital printing is a printer that can print with reactive inks over the entire width and length of the fabric, an “all-over” print. This gives you a unique fabric with a print that only you use, due to the 300 dpi resolution the print is sharp and shadow effects are also well displayed in the print. This technique also ensures beautiful full colors. It is possible to print the fabric for 100% or to use the base fabric color by not printing the fabric completely.

Advantages of Digital printing:

• Unique fabric due to your own print

• Print stays beautiful for a long time

Disadvantages of Digital printing:

• Minimum number of meters to be printed is relatively high

• Limitation of fabrics to be used

A relatively easy way to provide clothing with prints is Direct To Garment printing, or DTG printing for short.

A DTG printer is a special printer with special ink that can print directly onto the fabric of your garment in full color. Previously, this was only possible on white fabrics with non-white ink. The latest printers that our partners have can also print on dark fabrics, and also with white ink. Pre-treatment of the fabric remains necessary for dark fabrics.

With this technique, your print can be printed flat on a garment or part of it, if it has not yet been stitched together, in a special printer. The print is then printed directly onto the fabric, possibly also over zippers.

A DTG printer makes it possible to print one print. Dozens of pieces do not have to be made. That is why this printing technique is also used for samples, to see whether, for example, proportions and dimensions in images and texts are correct.

Advantages of DTG printing:

• Printing from 1 piece

• Printing in full color

Disadvantages of DTG printing:

• Dark fabrics need to be pretreated

• The costs per print are relatively high

• The surface to be printed is relatively small, maximum A3 format

Embroidery does not really fall under the heading of prints. However, it is a good way to apply logos, texts and (limited) images to clothing.

The latest embroidery machines are efficient and can embroider very accurately. A print file must be optimized for embroidery. Not every image can simply be embroidered. However, there are many possibilities to achieve a perfect result. Before embroidery can take place, the company that applies the embroidery makes an embroidery card for the machine used. This is a digital file that determines, among other things, how many needle strokes are required. This is again important for the price. The more refined the embroidery, the more needle strokes are required. It is therefore possible that a small logo is much more expensive than a large text. In order to achieve a nice result for an embroidered image, text or logo, a piece of paper or thin cardboard is stitched to the back. This gives a more stable embroidery. Of course, this is removed at the edges. It is possible that more of the paper disappears during washing. This has no consequences for the embroidery itself.

Advantages of Embroidery:

• Luxurious appearance

• Remains beautiful for a long time

Disadvantages of Embroidery:

• Initial costs for making the embroidery card

• Despite the many colors, still a limitation, still limiting

Transfer printing is a printing technique in which an image is printed in mirror image on special paper or foil. After which this print is cut out and placed on the garment where the print is to be placed. In a special press, the image is transferred to the fabric under heat and high pressure. There are different types of transfer prints for different fabrics. There is also an increase in 3D prints and prints with relief. The transfer print technique can be applied to a small surface of the fabric as well as over the entire fabric, then it is an "all-over" print.

Advantages of Transfer prints:

• Easy way to place prints

• Relatively cheap

Disadvantages of Transfer prints:

• Have a professional company print in large numbers

• Limitation in the use of fabrics
